The State Key Laboratory of Catalytic Material and Reaction Engineering

As one of the first state key laboratories upon the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2007, the State Key Laboratory of Catalytic Material and Reaction Engineering passed the inspection in 2012. Its director is Long Jun, a professor level senior engineer, and the director of its Academic Committee is Li Dadong, a professor level senior engineer and an academician of CAE. Resource and environment is the bottleneck of sustainable national economic development in China, so it is necessary to build an energy-saving and environment-friendly society and follow the path of all-round and coordinated sustainable development. Petroleum is non-renewable resource. Along with rapid economic development, the rate of China’s dependence on foreign petroleum has exceeded by 40%, and the processing and consumption of petroleum have severe impacts on environment. At present, petroleum refining and petrochemical industry faces two major challenges: (1) petroleum resources become scarce and increasingly heavier and inferior; and (2) there are continuously higher requirements for production and consumption of petroleum products. To face these challenges, catalytic technology must be developed radically to enhance the technical level of petroleum refining and petrochemical industry.Catalytic technology is one of the most important fundamental technologies in modern petroleum refining and petrochemical industry, in which more than 60% of new products and more than 90% of new processes are developed based on catalysis. Among them, new catalytic material and new reaction engineering are generic catalytic technologies and play a fundamental and driving role in catalytic science and technological development. On this basis, the Laboratory provides two research focuses: (1) the fundamental research on petrochemical catalytic materials and (2) the fundamental research on petrochemical reaction engineering. In the fundamental research on petrochemical catalytic materials, the Laboratory particularly studies the synthesis laws, synthesis and modification methods of Zeolite catalytic materials, microporous/mesoporous composite materials, solid superacid catalytic materials, magnetic and acidic catalytic materials and amorphous alloy catalytic materials, and master the methods for modulating their crystal grain, surface acidity and pore canal, so as to turn them into active components of petroleum refining and petrochemical catalysts, facilitate the oriented conversion of participating molecules and enhance the yield of target products. In the fundamental research on petrochemical reaction engineering, the Laboratory particularly carries out the engineering research on magnetic fluidized bed, the engineering research on suspension/slurry bed reaction and the engineering research on supercritical reaction, etc., and employs reaction engineering methods to improve catalytic activeness and stability and reinforce the reactions. Through efforts for years, the Laboratory has fulfilled various tasks and objectives during construction. Not only does the Laboratory improve the level of hardware considerably, but also makes a great deal of technical innovations. Since 2008, the Laboratory has made great progresses in the synthesis and application of catalytic materials and the research on reaction engineering, applied for 218 domestic patents of invention, received 95 domestic patents of invention and published 8 articles in international periodicals. The Laboratory won the second prize of National Science & Technology Progress Award for “Caprolactam Production Process Integration Technology Based on Cyclohexanone Ammoximation” in 2009 and the second prize of National Invention Award for “Hollow Titanium Silicalite (HTS) Industrialization Technology Development” in 2010. Also, the Laboratory has researched and developed the novel structure zeolite Y (NSY) composite with mesoporous and microporous structures and its synthetic process that is featured by high utilization rate of raw materials, high yield rate of single reactor, recycling of mother liquor and environment-friendly production. Compared with common industrial agents, the FCC with NSY composite (CTZ-1) provides favorable activity, heavy oil cracking capability and coke selectivity, and has better gasoline selectivity and higher yield of light oil. The Laboratory has also developed the synthesis and production technology of nano β zeolite, and taken it as active component to prepare ethylbenzene synthetic catalysts. Moreover, it combines this with the research on reaction engineering to develop the liquid-phase circulation reaction technology, lower the consumption of energy and materials, and elongated the service life of catalysts. In 2009, this technology was employed to develop 650,000t/a ethylbenzene facility, whose technical level reached to the leading international level. The Laboratory has 35 leading researchers, including 30 with PhD degrees and 22 with senior technical titles, which form a good age structure with sixteen 45-year-old researchers, fourteen 45-35-year-old researchers and five below-35-year-old researchers. In the past three years, it has cultivated 15 graduates and post-doctoral researchers, of whom two received further education in York University and Cambridge University, and has introduced two PhD researchers to improve the capability and level of research team. In 2008, the Laboratory released 11 open funds to several universities, e.g. Fudan University, Jilin University and Nankai University, as well as well-known research institutes, such as, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, CAS, and enterprises, to sufficiently utilize the wide variety of disciplines in academies of science and institutes of higher education and their knowledge of cutting-edge trend in these disciplines. By combining its knowledge of enterprises’ technical needs and extensive connection with enterprises, the Laboratory develops a technical development platform for combining production, learning and research and realizing complementary advantages and mutual benefits. Meanwhile, it also attaches much importance to technical exchange with domestic and overseas fellows. Since 2008, it has organized more than 30 researchers to attend domestic and overseas academic conferences and invited many famous professors to give speeches, widening the range of vision and facilitating the research through external academic exchange. The Laboratory has been operating favorably since its establishment, and will further conclude scientific achievements based on two research focuses and put forward the common issues in the researches of petrochemical catalytic material and reaction engineering, so as to form the topics of scientific research. In the research on catalytic materials, it will develop zeolite catalytic materials hierarchically on one hand and combine the research with application on the other hand to strengthen the research on other new catalytic materials and provide new component for petroleum refining and petrochemical catalysts. In the research on reaction engineering, it will mainly center on conversion of heavy crudes and the production of clean and substitute fuels, and combine them with the application of new catalytic materials to develop new reaction engineering technology. The Laboratory will keep strengthening the building of talent team and endeavor to cultivate and gather a group of first-class talents in this field, in order to enhance its research level in an all-round way. In the meanwhile, it attaches importance to applying for key national projects, and takes active part in national 863 Program, 973 Program and key technology R&D program. Depending on national program, the Laboratory develops a platform of communication and cooperation with other universities and research institutes to facilitate the association with them and drive the technical progress of industry.
