NIE Hong Elected as Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

On November 21st, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) announced the results of the 2025 academician selections. A total of 73 new CAS fellows and 71 new CAE fellows were elected. Nie Hong, Chief Expert of SINOPEC Group and Scientist of RIPP, was elected as a member of the CAE. Up to now, Sinopec has a total of 20 domestic and 1 foreign academicians.

Nie Hong has long been engaged in the research and development of hydrotreating catalysts and technologies for oil refining. She is a widely recognized leading talent in China's petroleum refining industry, and was selected as the "National Candidate of the New Century Talents Program for Millions of People" and "National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker". She has won a series of awards, including the "Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation Science and Technology Innovation Award", the "Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Achievement Award ", the "3rd National Innovation and Pioneering Certificate", the "Zhao Yonggao Science and Technology Innovation Award of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation", and the "Sinopec Science and Technology Innovation Merit Award".

Up to now, a series of catalysts and technologies developed by Nie Hong’s team have been applied in 261 times both at home and abroad, making significant contributions to elevating China's overall refining technology to the world advanced level. She has led the development of a series of diesel hydrotreating technologies, which have supported the diesel quality upgrading from China National Standard I to China National Standard VI. She has also developed high-efficiency heavy oil conversion technologies, significantly extending the operation cycle and increasing the light oil yield. Additionally, she has led the team for the independent development of bio-jet fuel production technology and pioneered its domestic application. This effort enabled the first domestic production of bio-jet fuel and its first use in commercial flights, filling the domestic gap and laying a technical foundation for carbon emission reduction in the aviation industry.

Nie Hong and her team have developed technologies that have reached the international advanced level and been widely applied in industry, making outstanding contributions to the green and low-carbon development of China's petroleum refining industry. Their research achievements have won two Second Prizes in the National Science and Technology Progress Awards, one Second Prize of the National Technology Invention Award, two China Patent Gold Awards, and 12 First Prizes of Science and Technology Progress from Sinopec and industry associations.
